Hello classmates,

From Lynna (Helms) Reed, Oskaloosa, Iowa, Class of ‘62

50 years?  Goodness!   Have had so many various projects through the years, not sure where to start!  After graduation, I attended Sioux Falls College off and on.  Worked with clerical/typing jobs in Omaha off and on until moving to California to get married in 1964.  That lasted 6 years and I worked Civil Service through most of that time both in Santa Ana and at Camp Pendleton.  Back to Nebraska for a couple of years but missed California so headed back out there in 1972.  My soon-to-be husband lived in the apartment beneath mine (Knock Three Times was a popular song at the time).  We were married in August, 1974 and moved to Ridgecrest, CA – total desert, where I had vowed years earlier that I would never live.  Bill took an apprenticeship program for machinist at China Lake Naval Weapons Center in 1976 and continued on, becoming a metrologist.  I worked as clerk-typist at the base until our son, Shawn, made his appearance in 1982.  We had sold our home and were living in our motor home until then but decided there was no place to keep a basinet so we bought another home in the country.  I stayed home and began doing some writing.  Not much published at that time but have had several of those personal development articles published in recent years.  When Bill was forced to take medical retirement because of back problems, we decided to move to Iowa in 1991.  We chose where to live by, basically, pointing at the map and saying, “there.”  We did part of it through elimination but a medium-sized college town in southeastern Iowa brought us where we are now.  We bought a large home and made it into a Bed & Breakfast and had that for about 8 years.  Then we decided it was time to “retire” properly and bought a home on a small lake next to a state park.  I continued working part-time as an insurance agent for a telemarketing firm through those years along with doing home typing for the Credit Bureau, which required visiting 3 different court houses weekly until everything took form online.  I continue to type the reports and it is nice to be able to do everything from home.  Bill suffered a heart attack in November, this last year, but is doing well.  We had to change our diet so I’ve learned to cook a variety of new recipes.  During my free time I enjoy drawing and reading.  It will be fun seeing everyone at the banquet!  Hope you are there!

question/answer quiz:

      1.  Name and city/state where you live - Lynna (Helms) Reed - Oskaloosa, Iowa

        2.  Spouse's name and where he/she was born - Roosevelt William - "Bill"

        3.  How/where did you meet your spouse - I was married previosly for 6 years to fella from Tekamah.  We divorced and  I then met Bill after I moved to California.  He lived in apartment below mine in Santa Ana, CA - we were friends for a year before we started dating.  (I got his attention because I wore "clogs." J) We were married in 1974. -

4.  Your occupation before retirement -  Mostly clerical.  First in Omaha and then in California:  Draft Board, two colleges, insurance company, and then civil service.  We moved back to Iowa in 1991 and I've worked here for title company, as an insurance agent with telemarketing firm, for Pepsi bottling company, and have done home typing since we moved here for credit bureau (collecting information at court houses and typing reports), which I am still doing - can gather most of my necessary info online now.

        5.  Did you attend college or special schooling - Sioux Falls College right after high school.  But left before graduating to get married.  Finally got my AA while working civil service on the desert in California.

        6.  Your spouse's occupation before retirement - USMC for 9 years.  Then as machinist/metrologist for civil service until back problems required a medical retirement in 1991.

        7.  Favorite place (city/state) where you have lived and why - I enjoyed southern California because of all the attractions available within short distance - going to the beach, to the mountains, Disneyland J, oodles and oodles of restaurants with "atmosphere."  Always someplace new to go.  I do enjoy the serenity and scenery where we live now, too!

        8.  How many children, if any - 1 son, Shawn Patrick, age 26, still single.

        9.  Grandchildren?  How many - 0

        10.  Special hobbies - I have been writing and selling articles for the past 20 years, mostly personal development.  And, as most know, I've been drawing (colored pencil) roses for past 5 years.  I truly enjoy doing both!

        11.  Any other details you care to share -  We now live by a small lake across from a state park, just 7 miles from town in a little "village" with about 50 households.  We do have a city hall but that's all the "business" that is here.  Bill loves to go fishing and I love going for walks.  It is very peaceful and we see wild life around and about.  A lovely place for retirement!  We do enjoy travelling, too.
